Visions of Sugar Queens dance in our heads. No, we’re not misquoting a classic holiday tale, our mouths are watering after the most delectable new pastries on the block—the delights at Edgar’s Bakehouse.
The man behind Edgar’s’ new concept is Michael Romano, a New York City transplant and winner of the Food Network’s “Sweet Genius,” on which he competed against other pastry chefs—and the clock—in creating confections from surprise ingredients.
The fruits of Romano’s imagination are on display in the hunger-inducing case that features Banana Cream Pie Eclairs, Peaches and Cream Cheesecakes, Strawberry Shortcakes and more. The aforementioned Sugar Queen (a nod to the South) is a flaky, sugary pillow that delights the taste buds. The imaginative Blackberry Corn Cookie is a standout among the baked goods (the Oat-rageous Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, however, is a close second).
Then come the savories. The Mushroom and Gouda Bruffin is a brioche popover muffin filled with gouda béchamel and shiitake mushrooms. Not to be outdone, the Scallion Cream Cheese Cruffin (our overall fave) is a croissant popover muffin with everything bagel seasoning and filled with a generous amount of scallion cream cheese.
Sandwiches and great coffee drinks are also available.
Edgar’s Bakehouse, open M-F 8 am-6 pm, 3179 Washington Road, 706.863.3669
