Karen and Steve Foushee love outdoor living. The couple have created a picturesque backyard haven in their West Augusta neighborhood.
Lush green foliage, filled with evergreens, annuals and perinnials, provides beautiful color throughout the year. And while the backyard is filled with an array of plants and flowers, Karen, a pediatrician, admits she has a few favorites.
A lemon and olive trees are clearly the favorites. “We had lots of lemons last year plus it smells amazing,” Dr. Foushee said. The olive tree also produced fruit, however beating the birds to gather them is an ongoing challenge. The landscape also features weeping mulberry, loquat, boxwoods, magnolias and cast iron plants just to name a few.
Among the flora and fauna are a pool, hot tub and outdoor fireplace. “We really have enjoyed the fireplace this year,” Dr. Foushee explained. “It’s the perfect spot to relax with a glass of wine.”
The Foushees put in the swimming pool when their children were younger. Today, their grandchildren continue to enjoy it on a hot summer day. There is also a pool house that was once a one-car garage.
“We really do love being outside,” Dr. Foushee said. “We spend time alot of time with our family out here.” And it’s easy to see why.
