Publisher Notes: August/September 2019

I grow weary of hearing people complain about there’s nothing to do in Augusta. Honestly, you aren’t paying attention if you believe that.

Our city has a wide variety of entertainment options, starting with a vibrant arts community. If we didn’t believe here at Augusta Magazine, we certainly would not dedicate an entire issue to celebrating the arts.

I look forward to this issue each year because it seems that we evolve so much as a community from one year to the next. And it affords me the opportunity to become more acquainted with our arts community.

I recently visited the Jessye Norman School of the Arts for a photoshoot. Gary Dennis, executive director, is one of this year’s arts awards recipients, presented by the Greater Augusta Arts Council. When I visited briefly with Gary, he gave me a glimpse of what this school does for our children.

While the program is designed to educate those who are less fortunate, the school is open to others  – as long as they are committed to participating and attending.

Augusta is filled with programs like JNSA for children. As for us adults, we are covered too. If you don’t believe me, check out our annual Arts Calendar. It’s filled with concerts, Broadway shows, plays, ballets, visual arts displays, festivals and so much more.

So next time your looking for something to do, check out a show, attend a festival, go to the theater and support our local arts community! I promise, you won’t be sorry you did!
